The story behind the work

Salome Jaffe is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago currently based in rural New Mexico.

In her current body of work, Salome draws inspiration from Langston Hughes' poignant poem, "What Happens to a Dream Deferred." Employing metals as her medium, Salome engages in a delicate dance with the natural world, subjecting them to a deliberate and intricate process of oxidation. This alchemical transformation mirrors the way dreams, when left unfulfilled, undergo a metamorphosis on a molecular level. Through prolonged exposure to specific climates, environments, and conditions, the metals evolve, revealing their hidden depths.

Much like dreams, the materials Salome works with possess an inherent potential for change and evolution. The resulting textures and hues reflect the nuanced complexities of deferred aspirations, capturing the essence of what might have been, and the beauty that emerges from transformation. The interplay between the metals and their environment speaks to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It is a testament to the enduring power of dreams, even when deferred, to shape and be shaped by the world around them.

Through Salome's work, she invites viewers to contemplate the profound parallels between the malleability of materials and the human experience. She hopes to spark a dialogue about the fragility and strength inherent in our dreams, and to inspire a deeper understanding of the transformative potential that lies within us all.

Ultimately, Salome's art serves as a tribute to the indomitable nature of human ambition, reminding us that even in the face of challenges, there is beauty to be found in the evolution of our dreams. It is her hope that this body of work will resonate with viewers, prompting them to reflect on their own journeys and the enduring legacy of their aspirations.
